Niqab, Naqab, Nakab or Nikab? The Types of Niqab Explained
By Uluwia

Search for a niqab in India and you will find it written many ways: niqab, naqab, nakab, nikab. You will also find many styles with names that are not always explained. This guide clears both up, so you can choose the niqab that suits you.
Niqab, naqab, nakab or nikab?
They are all the same garment. The word comes from Arabic, and when it is written in English or Hindi and Urdu it is spelt in different ways. Niqab is the most common spelling worldwide, while naqab and nakab are very common in India. Whatever you call it, a niqab is a face covering worn with a hijab or sheila that leaves the eyes uncovered.
The main types of niqab
Saudi niqab
The Saudi niqab is the classic style: a single piece that ties at the back, usually with a band across the forehead and an opening for the eyes. Some Saudi niqabs have a buckram band, a stiffened strip that keeps the forehead neat and structured. Others are made without buckram for a softer, more flexible fit.
- Prefer a structured, crisp look? Try the Layla Saudi Niqab, with a buckram forehead band and a cross-elastic eye opening.
- Prefer something softer? The Noura Saudi Niqab Without Buckram has the same classic style without the stiff band.
One-layer niqab
A one-layer niqab is a single, lightweight layer of fabric. It is breathable and simple, which makes it a favourite for everyday wear and warm weather. Our Wahdah One Layer Niqab is made from premium chiffon and comes in Small, Medium and Large.
Two-layer niqab
A two-layer niqab adds a second layer for more coverage and less transparency, while staying light enough to wear all day. See the Saniya Two Layer Niqab.
Half niqab
A half niqab covers the lower part of the face only. It is easy to put on and works well for beginners or for a lighter look. The Riqah Half Niqab is our lightweight everyday option, and it can be layered with the Safilah Upper One Layer Niqab for a complete, layered look.
Flap niqab
A flap niqab has an extra flap of fabric that can be dropped over the eyes for added privacy, then lifted when you need clearer vision. The Hayah Flap Niqab gives you that choice in soft chiffon.
How to choose your niqab
- For everyday wear and warm weather: a one-layer or half niqab in breathable chiffon.
- For more coverage: a two-layer niqab, or a flap niqab you can drop over the eyes.
- For a neat, structured look: a Saudi niqab with buckram.
- For softness and comfort: a Saudi niqab without buckram.
- For complete coverage: add a ghashwa over your niqab.
Fabric and care
Chiffon is light, breathable and drapes softly, which is why all our niqabs are made from premium chiffon. To keep it soft, hand wash gently in cold water with a mild detergent, avoid wringing, and dry in the shade.
